Room in the flat: removing the wallpaper
Wallpaper is cool. As long as you don't have to remove it. It's not that bad if you want to cover wallpaper with wallpaper. Then it's not necessary to make the old wallpaper gone completely. You have to remove the top layer and that's it. You can hang your shiny brand new wallpaper on the "leftovers". The problem is when you want to paint your wall and you had a wallpaper there. We wanted to remove the wallpaper in one day. We thought that we can do it. But we couldn't be more wrong.
Tapeta, którą widzieliście na zdjęciach przed (tutaj), miała jakieś 10 lat. Mniej więcej wtedy Ciocia, właścicielka mieszkania, poprosiła mojego Tatę o wymianę poprzedniej tapety (którą również kładł on).
The wallpaper that you've seen in the "before" pictures (here) had about 10 years. 10 years ago my Aunt (the owner of the flat) asked my Dad to change the older wallpaper he had hung another 10 years back. We had no idea who was the first person to hang the wallpaper in the room. We knew that Dad, when hanging the new one, was removing just the top layer of the older one, not everything to the bare wall.
Thanks to the unit furniture we knew that the first thing (ever) that was on the walls was yellow paint with silver pattern. The paint was really weird. It was staining skin and clothing. We were afraid that we'd have a problem. We didn't know how it would behave after painting a new paint on the top. We were quite lucky (I guess?) becasue when we throw a little bit of water and scrubbed it a few times with wire brush it came off quite easily. We just had powder all over the floor. When powder was mixed with leftover water, we had our private mud. So cool, right?! In fact, it wasn't that bad, because we saved about half day of work (or even more). It'd be horrible if that wall was all covered in wallpaper like the rest of the room!
Miejscami powstały lekkie wgłębienia i dziury.
We started removing the wallpaper in the morning. When the first layer came off quite easily, we had to face the monster. I feel like this will be my nightmare for the rest of my life. Even though we spread the water on the wall and waited about 15 or 20 minutes for it to soak into, the wallpaper didn't come off. It was super weird, we asked ourselves: wasn't adhesive water-soluble or what?. We took putty knives and started our labor. The adhesive was so strong that we had to strip it with plaster. We accidentally made some holes, water was pouring like crazy, and after a few hours of "putty-knifing" we had to use our wire brushes.
Poniżej możecie zobaczyć film, na którym możecie zobaczyć
jak ciężko tapeta odchodziła od ściany. Horror. (W tle rozmawiam
przez telefon, opowiadam Mamie jak się męczymy :)).
Check the video, where you can see how hard it was to remove that freaking wallpaper from the wall. Horror. (In the video I'm speaking with my Mum on the phone, telling her how hard we work :)).
In the afternoon my Dad's brother came to help us. We were working together to 10 p.m., scrubbing walls. There's nothing better for tightening family bonds than swearing together about the wallpaper.
One of the walls is thinner than the others. We had a hard time. Because it's made of smooth, pure concrete (?), adhesive was sticking better than anywhere. There was no plaster on the top so we couldn't strip the wallpaper with plaster (as we did on the previous walls).
On the second day, we started working in the morning once again. We also called Aunt to ask her about the adhesive. She told us that one man that was hanging the wallpaper (twenty something years ago) had a problem with the "powdered" paint. When he was trying to make wallpaper stick to the wall and using regular adhesive, wallpaper was just falling. He was working in fittings factory and as long as everything happened during communism time in Poland, everyone was stealing like crazy (it was said that everyone was "arranging" things). So he stole ("arranged") some adhesive from his factory. It's obvious that adhesive like that couldn't be water-soluble. That's why pouring water on it didn't affect it. We had no choice but be patient and scrub. Just because I wanted to have painted walls!
A tymczasem nikomu NIE życzę tapety przyklejonej klejem do armatury, bo to istna MA-SA-KRA.
In the afternoon, we had about 10% leftover wallpaper. We decided that we just can't handle ripping it. Our hands were sore after many hours of pressing wire brush and/or putty knife. We just wanted to paint, but that's the topic for the next blog post ;). I hope noone will have wallpaper attached to the wall with fitting adhesive because it's horrible!
